Celebrate Black History Month at the 2nd Annual Community Spiritual Sing on Saturday, February 17th at 2pm at St. George’s Church. The tradition of singing spirituals at St. George’s began with African-American composer, arranger and baritone Harry Thacker Burleigh (1866-1949), a soloist at St. George’s for over fifty years. His appointment was the "first known instance of an African American being admitted to a vested choir of a white parish." Burleigh went on to become the first African-American composer acclaimed for his art songs, and for his arrangements of spirituals.
