At the Dawn of the new century, everything is changing…and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together – that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Together, they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair… and what it means to live in America.

This program showcases two of the numerous short documentaries that Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kie?lowski directed between 1966-80 – the first focuses on both workers and management at a tractor factory, the second on orthopaedic surgeons in Warsaw who struggle with dire working conditions – as well as the documentary/fiction hybrid film, CURRICULUM VITAE (1975). Purporting to document the Party Control Committee, an authoritative Party commission that monitored Party members and accepted or revoked their standing through informal trials, the film features the real committee, but the individual under investigation is in truth an actor with a fictional backstory (albeit one that closely parallels his character’s). In 2014, The Wind and The Wave, a duo from Austin, TX, quietly released one of the best albums of the year. From The Wreckage glowed with a rootsy golden tone that encompassed everything from indie-folk, to alt-country to blues-rock to Southern psychedelia. Its creators, touring musician turned songwriter and producer Dwight Baker and singer-songwriter Patty Lynn, began making music together on a lark, never dreaming anything would come of it. Baker describes it as "kind of like what happens when two friends hold hands and jump in a freezing lake just to see what it feels like." Thanks to the undeniable chemistry between the pair, the music took on a life of its own and The Wind and The Wave soon found themselves with a major-label record deal, embarking on U.S. headlining tours supporting From The Wreckage, having their songs appear in such TV shows as Grey’s Anatomy, and racking up millions of plays on Spotify and Apple Music. The band also earned itself a rabid following, with fans especially enamored of Lynn’s feisty vocals and brutally personal lyrics about challenging relationships with lovers and family members as well as her relationship with herself. Dylan LeBlanc knows second chances don’t come around often. But, neither do voices like his. Overwhelmed by the speed his gift would take him, from Applebee’s server to "the new Neil Young" in a matter of months, he walked away from an unlikely major label deal after releasing two critically acclaimed albums. He slipped into a blur of booze and self-doubt. Exhausted and damaged at just 23-years-old, Dylan came home to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to write a new life for himself. In between the moments of clarity and a few familiar falls, he also wrote a new album, Cautionary Tale: a collection of shimmering, arresting songs with the same haunting vocals that caught the attention of Lucinda Williams and Bruce Springsteen, now with a sharpened edge honed by hastened maturity. "This record is about me getting honest with myself," says Dylan. "I had to let the guilt about the past go and find a new truth within myself. This time, I felt like I really had something to say." To help him say it, he sought out long-time friend Ben Tanner, the same guy who had secretly helped Dylan record his first songs after hours while working at fabled FAME Studios. (He also introduced a 16-year-old Dylan to … (read more)
