Louis Malle’s affair with the documentary genre spans two and a half decades, from 1962-87. His subjects were likewise far-reaching, ranging from the Tour de France in Paris, to the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, to the frenetic streets of Calcutta. In 1979, Malle was sent to the heart of Middle America, to Glencoe, Minnesota, on a PBS-sponsored project. There he made the acquaintance of several proud denizens of a then-prosperous farming community, and filmed their daily rituals and serendipitous moments with an equally genial curiosity. Six years later, Malle returned to the town of his own volition, only to find spirits dampened by the effects of the Reagan-era recession. The film that resulted, GOD’S COUNTRY, is a historical yet timeless memento of the American Midwest.
