One of his greatest and most challenging films, and perhaps his most definitive statement on the nature of ‘documentary,’ A MAN VANISHES began as an investigation into one of the thousands of missing persons cases that occur in Japan each year. Imamura focuses on one particular case, following the man’s fiancée as she desperately searches for him. But as the film progresses, its status as nonfiction becomes complicated. Imamura hires an actor to pose as an investigator, while the woman ultimately grows more interested in Imamura himself than in her missing fiancé. The film culminates in a scene that explodes any stable sense of fiction and reality, making A MAN VANISHES an early example of what film historian Donald Ritchie called, "One of Imamura’s major themes…[the] confrontation of illusion with reality (and the resultant problem of telling which is which)."

Unfortunately, the worst thing I found was the state of the mesh. Within two days, I found the lower end of the seat’s mesh peeling off. However, “peeling” may be a misnomer. The mesh lining looks like it was crudely attached to the backrest because nothing appears ripped. Luckily, this potential oversight doesn’t affect the support or comfort. From my understanding, this type of damage is covered by the included OFM Limited Lifetime Warranty. But if you’re lazy, like me, you might not care. Hence, if you’re like me, you’ll enjoy this chair.
